Namibian German Legal Cooperation e.V.

Würzburgs students encourage development of Namibian law

In cooperation with the Namibian Ministry of Justice in Windhoek, Namibia, the faculty of law of the University Würzburg gets involved with the promotion and further development of the Namibian law, especially after Namibia´s independence from South Africa that is characterized by a renouncing of racial discrimination and an embracing of desegregation. Students of the University of Würzburg, predominantly students of law or politics, are therefore giventhe chance to take an active part in form of a month-long internship in the Namibian Ministry of Justice or in an non-governmental organization.

With the Law Reform Commission of the Namibian Ministry of Justice the students are able to support the preparation of new acts by means of comparative law concerning the central legal problems of the partcular bill.

Social projects

In addition to the work with the Law Reform Commission of the Namibian Ministry of Justice and with the data base Namlex the students also voluntarily take on social responsibility. Collecting donations they support a children's home in Windhoek that offers children a home who lost their parents to aids or whose parents are not able to take care of their children any longer because of their disease. Those donations include clothes and toys. The collected money is used for the financing of food, vaccinations and school supplies for the children.

Further, each semester the students arrange an appeal for money at the faculty of law in Würzburg, called "One Euro for a law student in Namibia". Then, the students request their 1,600 fellow students to donate (at least) one Euro. Arithmetically, this sum is sufficient to enable one destitute Namibian student to study law at the University of Namibia. After graduation the University of Würzburg is keen to offer this student the possibility of postgraduate studies of German law (LL.M.) in Würzburg. Regarding Namibian history, especially its connection to Germany as a former colony of the latter, a certain German imprint suggests itself. Therefore, postgraduate studies of German law are especially suited to ameliorate the student's career opportunities in Namibia.
