Workshop: Digitalisation and AI in the justice system. Opportunities and limits.
On 24 April 2023, the RobotRecht research centre at the University of Würzburg and the Bamberg Higher Regional Court held a joint workshop on "Digitalisation and AI in the judiciary". Experts from the judiciary, academia and administration discussed practical and legal aspects of new technologies - from digital documentation to the use of AI systems. Contributions were made by Dr Sebastian Fickert, Gernot Kintzel, Dr Mona Sloane and Prof Dr David Roth-Isigkeit, among others. The workshop offered valuable insights and promoted interdisciplinary dialogue.
Workshop on the EU Regulation on Artificial Intelligence
The first scientific workshop on the planned EU regulation on artificial intelligence took place at the Old University of Würzburg under the direction of Prof Dr Dr Eric Hilgendorf. Together with the Bavarian AI Council and other partners, key aspects of the draft regulation - from prohibited practices to transparency obligations and supervision - were discussed. Experts from the fields of law, technology and politics critically analysed the foundations and challenges of the so-called "AI Act", which will have far-reaching effects on many areas of life as the "GDPR of AI". The results will be published in a conference volume.
People - Law - Digitalisation
On 8 October 2021, the Bamberg Higher Regional Court and the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg held a joint symposium on the topic of "People - Law - Digitalisation" in the Neubaukirche. The focus was on the technical possibilities of justice digitisation and empirical findings from surveys in the justice sector. The interdisciplinary conference was aimed at a specialist audience and interested parties and was organised by the RobotRecht research centre as part of the "Humans and Justice in the Digital Age" project.
Thematic afternoon "Ethics and law of autonomous systems"
On 14 October 2019, the Zentrum Digitalisierung.Bayern, the Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation and the RobotRecht research centre at the University of Würzburg hosted an afternoon event on the topic of "Ethics and Law of Autonomous Systems". The focus was on questions of responsibility, ethical design and technical implementation of autonomous technologies. Prof Eric Hilgendorf, Prof Julian Nida-Rümelin and Dr Alexandra Kirsch discussed the interdisciplinary challenges of future system developments under the moderation of Kimberly Trommler.
Conference "Digitalisation, Artificial Intelligence and Law"
On 14 and 15 March 2019, an international conference on digitalisation and AI in law took place in the Toskana Hall of the Würzburg Residence. Experts from all over the world discussed the legal and ethical challenges of digital transformation. The conference focussed on two topics: "AI, law and ethics" and "Challenges posed by the internet". A keynote speech by Dr Christoph Peylo (Bosch) rounded off the programme.
Net.Law.S
On 19 and 20 February 2018, the Net.Law.S conference took place at the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg in cooperation with the RobotRecht research centre. The focus was on legal, ethical and social issues relating to smart mobility, Industry 4.0 and e-health. With presentations, panels and discussions, the event offered practical insights for lawyers, technicians and decision-makers. Highlights included the keynote speech by Prof Dr Dr Udo di Fabio and the discussions on data sovereignty and the legal framework for digital innovation.
4th Würzburg Conference on Technology Law
On 30 and 31 May 2016, the 4th Würzburg Conference on Technology Law took place at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Munich. Under the title "Emergency Algorithms", the conference focussed on legal and ethical questions of dilemma situations in the context of autonomous vehicles. In presentations and discussions with experts from the fields of law, technology and ethics, possible solutions were debated intensively. The event was organised in cooperation with the MCIR Munich.
Conference "Medicine and data protection law"
On 8 and 9 April 2016, the Faculty of Law at the University of Würzburg hosted a conference on the topic of "Medicine and Data Protection". Legal challenges of data protection in hospitals, in medical research, in medical practices and in the course of digitalisation were discussed in four thematic blocks. The interdisciplinary event was aimed at lawyers, doctors and all interested parties. It was organised by the Chair of Criminal Law and Information Law (Prof. Dr. Dr. Eric Hilgendorf).
3rd Würzburg Conference on Technology Law
On 11 and 12 December 2015, the 3rd Würzburg Conference on Technology Law took place under the title "On the way to the autonomous vehicle". The conference focussed on legal issues surrounding the increasing automation of driving functions. The conference provided space for an interdisciplinary exchange between science and practice on the challenges of autonomous driving.
2nd Würzburg Conference on Technology Law
The 2nd Würzburg Conference on Technology Law took place on 17 and 18 October 2014. The focus was on legal, technical and social aspects of vehicle automation. The interdisciplinary event provided space for an exchange between research and practice on the challenges of automated mobility.
1st Würzburg Conference on Technology Law
The 1st Würzburg Conference on Technology Law took place as part of the accompanying research for the "AUTONOMIK" technology programme of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. The conference focussed on legal issues relating to autonomous systems, Industry 4.0, data protection and liability. Practical contributions from science and industry highlighted ways to implement technical innovations with legal certainty.
Robotics and legislation
From 7 to 9 May 2012, the conference "Robotics and Legislation" took place at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) at Bielefeld University. Experts from the fields of technology, law, ethics and industry discussed legal challenges in dealing with robotics as well as possible new regulations in view of the rapid pace of technological progress.
Autonomous Systems and the Law
On 2 November 2012, the first European conference on autonomous systems and the law took place at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology in Berlin. Legal, ethical, cultural and sociological challenges in the use of autonomous technologies were highlighted in international presentations. The event provided a platform for interdisciplinary exchange and discussion on solutions for dealing with autonomous systems.
Panel discussion: Film Plug & Pray
On 5 July 2011, the documentary Plug & Pray was shown in Lecture Hall I of the Faculty of Law as part of the DFG project "Robotics and Law" led by Prof. Dr Dr Eric Hilgendorf and Prof. Dr Klaus Schilling. The multi-award-winning film addresses the opportunities and limits of artificial intelligence. Afterwards, experts from the fields of law and computer science discussed the ethical and legal implications of autonomous systems with the audience.
