    Curriculum Vitae

    Florian Bien is a Full Professor (“Ordentlicher Professor”) of Law at the University of Würzburg in 2011. He holds the Chair in International Business Law, International Arbitration Law and Private Law.

    Before joining the University of Würzburg, Professor Bien was a Senior Lecturer at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, Germany (Akademischer Rat, 2007 - 2011) and at the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, France ("Maitre de conférences associé", 2004 - 2007). During his time at Sorbonne University, he set up and directed together with Professor David Capitant a special study program in German law designed for French barristers (Avocats à la Cour) willing to be admitted to the German bar and to acquire the German title “Rechtsanwalt”.

    Education included a Master in European and International Law ("Maîtrise en Droit"), University of Aix-Marseille III, France (1999), First and Second State Examination, Tübingen, Germany (2001 and 2003), Doctorate in law (thesis on third party rights in merger control procedures, Prize of the Association of the Metal and Electrical Industry Baden-Württemberg 2006, Prize of the Reinhold-and-Maria-Teufel-Foundation 2007) and Habilitation in law (thesis on the coordination of liability in chains of contracts due to a divison of labor, Grant by the Baden Württemberg Foundation), both University of Tübingen (2006 and 2011). Practical training included internships in Law firms in Stuttgart, Paris and New York as well as a traineeship with the Competition Directorate of the European Commission in Brussels.

    Professor Bien is the founder and organizer of the "Studienkreis Wettbewerb und Innovation", a Discussion Group bringing together both legal and economic scholars and practitioners specialising in Competition Law, and founder and co-director of the Würzburg based research group "Law and Economics of Competition and Regulation". He is also co-editor of the Neue Zeitschrift für Kartellrecht (Beck), a journal focusing on competition law.

    Florian Bien was a guest professor at University of Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne) in Spring 2008 (one month), at Sciences Po Paris (Chaire Alfred Grosser) in the spring semester 2015 (six month) and at Aix Marseille University in September 2015. Furthermore, he was appointed visiting professor at Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas in the autumn semesters 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 (three resp. one month).
