Kizilirmak

Baran Kizilirmak studied law at the University of Ankara (Turkey) and completed his first Master’s degree at the University of Istanbul with a Master’s thesis on ‘The use of data collected for preventive purposes in criminal proceedings’. He subsequently completed a second Master’s degree in European and European Legal Studies at the University of Hamburg, which he undertook as a Jean Monnet scholarship holder. After successfully completing the Master’s programme with a thesis entitled ‘Cross-Border Transfer of Personal Data Under the GDPR Regime and the Turkish Legal Framework’, he was awarded the academic degree of LL.M. Following his studies, he worked for many years as a research assistant at Kadir Has University (Turkey) in the Department of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure.

With funding from the DAAD, he completed his PhD on the topic ‘Criminal Liability in Offences Involving Autonomous Systems Driven by Artificial Intelligence’ under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Dr. Eric Hilgendorf and was awarded the distinction ‘summa cum laude’. His legal specialisms and research interests lie in the fields of information technology, data protection law, artificial intelligence and criminal law.
