Artificial Intelligence and the Law

The Legal Tech Centre at the University of Würzburg is actively shaping the future of law and technology, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence (AI). Among other things, it investigates legal issues in the digital age, analyses technological developments and specifically prepares students for the opportunities and challenges posed by AI. The Centre receives support from the Hilgendorf Chair and the AI and Robotics Law Research Centre, which contribute their expertise in research and teaching.

DLD Future Hub: Impact of AI 2025 in Munich

In September 2025, the Legal Tech Centre, together with the Hilgendorf Chair, took part in the DLD Future Hub: Impact of AI in Munich. The international conference brought together leading representatives from academia, business and politics, including OpenAI, DeepL, Palantir, Google and Minister-President Markus Söder.

AI Legal Revolution 2025 in Würzburg

At the AI Legal Revolution trade fair in Würzburg, the Legal Tech Centre attended a panel discussion on the future of legal education in the age of AI. Prof. Dr Dr Eric Hilgendorf, a member of the Bavarian AI Council and the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on AI, contributed key insights into the opportunities and challenges posed by AI in legal education.

AI course for secretaries at the Faculty of Law

On 12 November 2025, the Legal Tech Centre offered the first-ever AI course for secretaries at the Faculty of Law, covering the application of AI and its practical benefits. In particular, the course also addressed the opportunities and risks, as well as the legal challenges, associated with the use of AI.

Theme week: ‘AI and the Law’

From 1 to 4 December, the Legal Tech Centre, the Würzburg Law Alumni Association and the Research Centre for AI and Robotics Law organised an AI-themed week. The presentations covered a wide range of topics, from the future of the legal professions (Prof. Thomas Klindt) to the social role of major tech corporations (Prof. Martin Andree, Prof. Markus Oermann) and practical applications of AI (Svantje Kaibel, Max Schneider). Johannes Härtlein presented the European AI regulatory framework, before Prof. Eric Hilgendorf concluded the series with a look at legal education in the age of AI.

New course: AI – From theory to practice

Following the great success of the ‘AI and Law’ theme week, the Legal Tech Centre has transformed the previous one-off lecture into a regular course. As well as exploring specific practical applications during the degree programme, the course also examines the opportunities and risks, as well as the legal challenges, associated with artificial intelligence. In the summer term of 2026, the course was relaunched for the first time following the AI week. In future, the course will move to larger premises, as demand exceeds the Legal Tech Centre’s capacity.

Lecture on ‘Digitalisation in the US Federal Government’

The launch of the pilot project run by the AI and Robotics Law Research Centre and the town of Kitzingen on 15 October 2026 focused on the digitalisation of the US federal administration. Using the AI chatbot America.gov as an example, the discussion centred on whether easier access to administrative services is also possible in Germany, and what questions this raises regarding the reliability of the information provided and data protection.
