About Würzburg

General Information

Würzburg is a vibrant and charming university city in the heart of Franconia, Germany. It is located on the banks of the Main River and surrounded by picturesque vineyards. Würzburg is not only the heart of one of Germany’s most renowned wine regions. It is also home tomany historical landmarks. The most famous is its UNESCO World Heritage, the Residenz, a Versailles-style former castle of the Würzburg prince-bishops. In its impressive staircase, you can visit one of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo’s masterpieces, the largest ceiling fresco of the world. Other notable landmarks well worth visiting are the Marienburg Fortress, the Old Main Bridge, and the St. Kilian's Cathedral. This blend of culture and history makes up the unique charm of Würzburg.

The University

The Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg was founded in 1402, which makes it the oldest University in Bavaria. In the heart of the city, you can find the Law Faculty which is located in a historic building called the “Old University” (“Alte Universität”).

Accessibility

Within a bit more than an hour Würzburg can be reached easily from Frankfurt Airport by train or car.
